Substitutions & Variations

  • Herb Choices: Use whatever herbs you have on hand rosemary, thyme, and parsley work best, but basil, oregano, or dill are also great, and if using dried herbs just use less because they’re stronger.
  • Salsa Variations: You can spice up your salsa with hot peppers like scotch bonnet or jalapeño, add lime juice for extra freshness, or even mix in avocado, corn, mango, or pineapple for a fun sweet or tropical twist.
  • Seasoning Swap: If you don’t have Creole seasoning, Cajun seasoning works well, or you can mix garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, oregano, and paprika to get that same bold, flavorful taste.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve everything fresh and warm for the best taste: Serve the tilapia right after cooking so it stays soft and juicy, with warm mashed potatoes and fresh salsa salad on the side for the best flavor and texture.
  • Drizzle extra lemon herb butter sauce on top before serving: Add a little extra sauce over the fish (and lightly over the potatoes too) just before serving to keep everything moist, flavorful, and glossy.
  • Balance the plate with colors and textures: Plate the golden tilapia with creamy mashed potatoes and fresh salsa salad to create a mix of soft, creamy, and crunchy textures that looks and tastes amazing.

Tips / Notes for Best Results

  • Perfectly Cooked Fish: Check your tilapia at the minimum time, it should be white, flaky, and reach 145°F (63°C), and always watch closely while broiling so it doesn’t burn.
  • Butter Tips: Always use room temperature butter so it mixes easily with garlic and herbs, or soften it quickly by cutting it small or warming it for a few seconds.
  • Prep Ahead: You can make the herb butter and salsa early, store them in the fridge, and even prep potatoes in water ahead of time to save cooking time later.
  • Presentation Tip: Serve the fish on a platter, spoon salsa on top, add fresh herbs and lemon wedges, and finish with a light sprinkle of paprika for a beautiful, restaurant style look.
