Ingredients

DOUGH:

  • - 2¼ tsp Red Star instant dry yeast
  • - ¼ cup granulated sugar + 1 tbsp (for proofing the yeast)
  • - 1 cup warm milk
  • - 3½ cups flour
  • - ½ tsp salt
  • - 2 eggs
  • - ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • - (I used a Caribbean market–bought essence, which is strong. If using a regular grocery￾store vanilla, I’d recommend ½ tsp as it’s more diluted.)
  • - 3 tbsp melted butter + 1 tbsp shortening (combined)
  • - 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • - 1 tbsp butter, for placing on dough*
  • - ¼ cup whole milk or evaporated milk, for brushing rolls*

FILLING:

  • - 8 tbsp butter
  • - 2 cups dark brown sugar
  • - 7 tsp ground cinnamon

CREAM CHEESE GLAZE:

  • - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
  • - 4 oz cream cheese
  • - 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • - 3 tbsp milk
  • - ¼ tsp vanilla essence

Instructions

Activate the yeast by mixing it with sugar and lukewarm milk, and let it sit for 10–15 minutes. In a mixer bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt, then add whisked eggs and vanilla. Pour in melted butter and shortening, add the yeast, and mix well. Beat on medium speed for about 3 minutes. Transfer the dough to a floured surface, knead gently until soft, then place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour.

In a bowl, mix butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon together until everything is well combined.

Mix butter and cream cheese until smooth, then slowly add powdered sugar while mixing. Add milk and vanilla, and keep mixing until you get the consistency you like.

Once the dough has risen, place it on a floured surface and roll it into a ½-inch thick rectangle. Spread softened butter over it, then add the filling evenly, repeating to create a nice thick layer. Roll the dough tightly and cut it into 12 equal pieces. Place the rolls on a greased baking tray and lightly sprinkle evaporated milk on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for about 15 minutes until golden brown, then take them out and pour the glaze over the rolls.
